Ein normannisch-staufisches Kastell markiert den höchsten Punkt der Stadt. Unter Friedrich dem II stand Melfi abermals im Fokus der Geschichte. 1231 proklamierte der Stauferherrscher hier die 'Konstitutionen von Melfi', einen Gesetzeskodex, der als Vorläufer einer modernen Staatsverfassung gilt. Er regelte Finanzen und Staatsmacht, harmonisierte verschiedene Rechtssysteme und drängte den Einfluss des Feudaladels zurück.
A Norman-Staufen castle marks the highest point of the city. Under Frederick II, Melfi was the centre of history. In 1231, the Staufen ruler proclaimed the 'Constitutions of Melfi', a new legal code that is considered the predecessor of a modern state constitution. It regulated finances and state power, harmonized various legal systems and pushed back the influence of the feudal nobility.
