The main attraction, of course, is Tyrol Castle, the ancestral seat of the country, built in the mid-12th century. But yet 100 years later, the counts of Tyrol moved the seat of their government to Merano and finally, in 1420, to Innsbruck. The castle decayed almost completely. Only an elaborate renovation program let the massive castle rise again like a phoenix from the ashes - as the 'South Tyrolean Museum of Cultural and Regional History'.
