Die Geschichte des Ortes Monte Sant´Angelo beginnt im 5. Jahrhundert mit der gleich dreimaligen Erscheinung des Erzengels Michael in einer Grotte. Darüber erhebt sich seither ein großes Pilgerzentrum. Die Gläubigen strömen bis heute aus allen Landesteilen herbei. Früher baten die Kreuzfahrer hier um eine erfolgreiche Reise ins Heilige Land. Auch illustre Persönlichkeiten wie Franz von Assisi und Thomas von Aquin sowie zahlreiche Könige kamen nach Monte Sant'Angelo. Im Mittelalter war der Ort wahrscheinlich das wichtigste Pilgerziel der Christenheit überhaupt.
The history of Monte Sant'Angelo starts in the 5th century with the same three-time appearance of Archangel Michael in a grotto. Since then a large pilgrimage site rises above it. To this day, the faithful come in flocks from all parts of the country. Previously, the Crusaders asked for a successful journey to the Holy Land. Even illustrious personalities such as Francis of Assisi and Thomas Aquinas as well as numerous kings came to Monte Sant'Angelo. In the Middle Ages, the place probably was the most important pilgrimage site of Christendom at all.
