In der Höhle tagte schon in griechischer Zeit ein Orakel. Im 2. Jahrhundert diente die Grotte dem Mithraskult, bei dem blutige Stieropfer dargebracht wurden. Heute wacht ein filigraner Marmor-Michael über den heiligen Ort. Dahinter soll sich sogar ein Fußabdruck des Erzengels befinden. Im christlichen Märchen gilt der schwertschwingende Engel als Bezwinger des Teufels, als Anführer der himmlischen Heerscharen, als Hüter des Paradiestores und Seelenwäger am Tag des jüngsten Gerichtes.
Yet in Greek times an oracle was consulted in the cave. In the 2nd century, the grotto served the Mithras cult, where bloody bull sacrifices were offered. Today, a filigree marble Michael watches over the holy place. Behind it, there should even be a footprint of the archangel. In the Christian fairy tale, the sword swinging angels is considered the conqueror of the devil, the leader of the heavenly hosts, the guardian of heaven's gate, and to be weighing all souls on the day of the Last Judgment.
