Nur wenige Besucher würden sich in die verschlafene Agrarstadt Bitonto verirren, gäbe es hier nicht die Kathedrale San Valentino, ein formvollendeter Bau der apulischen Romanik. Unter normannischer Herrschaft im 12. Jahrhundert begonnen, konnte das Gotteshaus 60 Jahre später vollendet werden. Löwen bewachen das Hauptportal, darüber wachsen zwei Pelikane aus der Fassade, die für das Opfer Christi stehen. Die reiche Verzierung mit Ornamenten lässt wieder orientalische Einflüsse erkennen.
Only a few visitors would come to the sleepy agricultural town of Bitonto if not for the Cathedral of San Valentino, a perfectly shaped example of Apulian Romanesque. Its construction started under Norman rule in the 12th century and was completed 60 years later. Lions guard the main entrance and two pelicans protrude from the façade, representing the sacrifice of Christ. The rich ornamentation shows oriental influences.
