In apulischer Romanik erhebt sich die Kathedrale San Sabino auf den Resten einer byzantinischen Vorgängerkirche. Als die Normannen das Land eroberten, brachten sie den romanischen Baustil mit, der sich mit der byzantinisch-orientalischen Architektur vermischte. Daraus entstand die apulische Romanik, charakterisiert durch eine starke Betonung der Vertikalen, durch reich mit Ornamenten und Fabelwesen verzierte Fensterportale sowie durch schützende Löwenskulpturen.
In Apulian Romanesque, the Cathedral of San Sabino rises on the remains of a Byzantine church. When the Normans conquered the country, they brought with them the Romanesque architectural style, which intermingles with Byzantine-Oriental architecture. This led to the Apulian Romanesque, characterized by a strong emphasis on the vertical, by window portals richly decorated with ornaments and mythical creatures and by protective lion sculptures.
