Little Skellig#

12 km vor der Küste ragt der Klippenzipfel von Little Skellig auf, Heimat einer Kolonie von 27.000 Basstölpelpaaren. Die Seevögel sind perfekte Jäger. Sie holen sich ihre Beute an Makrelen und Heringen aus dem Meer, indem sie mit Geschwindigkeiten von 100 km/h in das Wasser eintauchen, 5-10 sec. unter Wasser bleiben und dann mit einem Fisch im Maul wieder auftauchen. Basstölpel entfernen sich bei der Fischjagd bis zu 300 km von der Brutkolonie. Als ausgezeichnete Gleitflieger schaffen sie solche Entfernungen in nur 5 Stunden. In der Brutkolonie angekommen, legen sie nur ein einziges Ei. Der Jungvogel bleibt nach dem Schlüpfen 3 Monate unter Obhut seiner Eltern.
12 km off the coast, the cliff peak of Little Skellig, home to a colony of 27,000 gannets, stands out. The seabirds are perfect hunters. They pick up their prey from mackerel and herring from the sea by dipping into the water at speeds of 100 km / h, staying under water for 5-10 seconds and then reappearing with a fish in their mouth. Gannets move up to 300 km away from the breeding colony during the fish hunt. As excellent cobegos they manage such distances in only 5 hours. Once they come back to the breeding colony, they only lay one egg. The young bird is taken care of by his parents for 3 months after hatching.
