The style of the Cistercian abbey of Mellifont Mellifont Abbey, Ireland , founded in 1142, is not Irish at all. It is rather influenced by the northern French Gothic. Ireland's conversion to Christianity started with St. Patrick in 432 and passed off quite peacefully, as stories of martyrs are not recorded to us. On the contrary, the missionaries tried to fill the local practices with Christian content. Jesus Christ became the embodiment of a Celtic god and saint Birgit successor of a fertility goddess of the same name. The new dictrine could spread unopposedly.
