Hoch über dem Lough Swilly thront eine majestätische Steinfestung. Der Grianan of Aileach 55.0236888,-7.4297199 , ein keltisches Ringfort, entstand vor rund 2000 Jahren. Vermutlich handelte es sich um den Sitz der O´Neills, einer lokalen Königsfamilie, die bis in das 12. Jahrhundert den Nordosten der Insel beherrschte. Gut geschützt von den mächtigen Steinmauern standen im Inneren die hölzernen Rundhütten der Herrscherfamilie.
High above Lough Swilly stands a majestic stone fortress. The Grianan of Aileach 55.0236888,-7.4297199 , a Celtic ring fort, was built around 2000 years ago. Presumably it was the seat of the O'Neills, a local royal family that ruled the northeast of the island until the 12th century. Inside, the wooden round huts of the ruling family were well protected by the mighty stone walls.
