765 Höhenmeter hat der Pilger zum Gipfel des Croagh Patrick, Irlands heiligem Berg, zu überwinden. Hier soll Patrick 40 Tage gefastet, gebetet und den Teufel bekämpft haben, um den Engeln die Garantie abzuringen, dass die Iren nie ihren christlichen Glauben verlieren würden und er seine Schäfchen am jüngsten Tag selbst richten dürfe. Alljährlich pilgern unzählige Gläubige in 3-4 Stunden zum Gipfel, viele davon barfuß. Wenn das Blut aus den geschundenen Beinen tropft, dann soll die Buße umso wirkungsvoller sein.
The pilgrim has to climb 765 meters up to the summit of Croagh Patrick, Ireland's holy mountain. Here, Saint Patrick is said to have fasted, prayed and fought the devil for forty days in order to assure the angels that the Irish would never lose their Christian faith and that he himself could judge them on doomsday. Every year countless faithful make a pilgrimage to the summit in 3-4 hours, many of them barefoot. When the blood drips from the injured legs, then penitance is believed to be all the more effective.
