On the eastern bank of the Lagerfljot lake thrives a - by Icelandic standards - botanical sensation, a dense forest of pines, spruces and birches, which has already been afforested in the 1930s. Once Iceland has been partially wooded, but the need of charcoal and the browsing by sheep destroyed all the natural forest area of the island.
Am Ostrand des Lagerfljot-Sees erhebt sich – für isländische Verhältnisse – eine botanische Sensation – ein dichter Wald aus Kiefern, Fichten und Birken, der bereits in den 1930er Jahren aufgeforstet wurde. Einst war Island zum Teil bewaldet, doch der Bedarf an Holzkohle und der Verbiss durch die Schafe vernichtete alle natürlichen Waldflächen der Insel.
