Die 900 Jahre alte Panagia Episkopi

bildet ein besonders schönes Beispiel einer Kreuzkuppelkirche. Sie wurde aus den Resten eines antiken Heiligtums errichtet und war lange Bischofskirche der Insel. Im Inneren entdeckt man noch Reste uralter Fresken. Griechenlands Christen glauben wie ihre antiken Vorfahren an das stete Eingreifen von Heiligen ins tägliche Leben der Menschen. So wie den Göttern einst bestimmte Ressorts zugeteilt waren, sind auch die Aufgaben unter den Heiligen verteilt. Beispielsweise ist Nikolaos für Kinder und Seeleute zuständig, Paraskevi heilt Augenleiden und Markella lindert Hüftschäden. Auch viele orthodoxe Traditionen wie die Taufe durch vollständiges Untertauchen, haben antike Vorbilder.
