In römischer Zeit wurde Gortys zur Hauptstadt der Provinzen Kreta und Kyrenaia in Nordafrika. Auf den Ruinen der griechischen Agora errichtete man ein Odeion, eine überdachte Bühne für Ratsversammlungen, Rezitationsvorträge und musikalische Wettkämpfe.
In Roman times, Gortys became the capital of the provinces of Crete and Kyrenaia in North Africa. On the ruins of the Greek Agora they erected an Odeion, a covered stage for council meetings, recitation lectures and musical competitions.
