Etwa einen Kilometer landeinwärts liegt das mittelalterliche Zentrum der Stadt, das Kastro. In den unsicheren Jahrhunderten der venezianischen Herrschaft bildete sich eine spezielle Form des kykladischen Wehrdorfes heraus. Vier nahtlos aneinander gebaute dreigeschossige Häuserzeilen bilden ein Quadrat, durch das nur ein einziges Tor führte. Die fensterlosen Außenwände der Häuser bildeten quasi die Stadtmauer. Nach innen geneigte flache Dächer fingen das Regenwasser auf und leiteten es in Zisternen. 200 Menschen lebten damals in der gut geschützten Siedlung.
Around a kilometer inland the medieval center of the city, called Kastro, is located. In the unsafe centuries of the Venetian rule a special form of the cycladic fortified village evolved. Four rows of houses built next to each other form a square. Only one gate led through that complex. The windowless exterior walls of the houses were effectively the city walls. Inward slanted flat roofs collected the rain water and conducted it into cisterns. Back then 200 people lived in the well protected settlement.
