Errichtet wurde der Pirgos Ypsilis, der älteste venezianischer Wohnturm der Insel, im frühen 14. Jahrhundert. Dann hat man ihn jedoch wegen seiner Küstennähe und der damit verbundenen Piratengefahr in eine Festungsanlage verwandelt und später zu einem orthodoxen Kloster umfunktioniert.
The Pirgos Ypsilis was built in the early 14th century. It is the island's oldest Venetian residential tower. Then it was turned into a fortress, because of its proximity to the coast and the associated risk of piracy. Later it was converted into an Orthodox monastery.
