Viele der einstigen Häuser venezianischer Familien sind mittlerweile restauriert und zeugen vom Reichtum der ehemaligen Besitzer. Zu den gut geschützten Villen des Burgviertels führten nur drei Tore, die einst Tag und Nacht bewacht wurden. Warum gerade die Venezianer hierher kamen, liegt im 4. Kreuzzug begründet, der unter maßgeblicher Obhut der Republik Venedig stattfand und die Eroberung Ägyptens zum Ziel hatte. Tatsächlich jedoch wurde das byzantinische Konstantinopel geplündert und die gewonnenen Gebiete unter den Siegern aufgeteilt. Der venezianische Edelmann Marco Sanudo erhielt dabei 17 Kykladeninseln als Lehen, die er zu einem Herzogtum zusammenschloss. Die Ländereien verteilte er an venezianische Adelige, die sie durch ein Heer von Sklaven bewirtschaften ließen.
Many of the houses formerly belonging to Venetian families have meanwhile been restored and bear witness to the wealth of the former owners. The well-protected villas of the castle district were only accessible through three gates. They were once guarded day and night. Why the Venetians came here is due to the Fourth Crusade. It took place under the authority of the Republic of Venice and was aimed at the conquest of Egypt. In fact Byzantine Constantinople was plundered and the areas won were divided among the victors. The Venetian nobleman Marco Sanudo received 17 islands of the Cyclades as a fief and merged them into a duchy. He distributed the lands to Venetian nobles who had them farmed by an army of slaves.
