Apiranthos#

Die zerklüftete Nordostküste von Naxos zwischen Filoti und Apollonas war einst ein wichtiges Bergbaugebiet. Von hier kam der wertvolle Schmirgel, der im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert großen Wohlstand auf die Insel brachte. Unterwegs lohnen kleinen Bergdörfer wie Apiranthos und Koronos einen Besuch.
Gerademal 760 Einwohner zählt das Bergdorf Apiranthos. Gegründet wurde der Ort in venezianischer Zeit von Siedlern der Insel Kreta, die vor den Türken hierher geflüchtet waren. Noch heute sprechen die Bewohner einen kretischen Dialekt.
The rugged northeast coast of Naxos between Filoti and Apollonas was once an important mining area. From here the precious emery came that brought great prosperity to the island in the 19th and 20th century. Worthwhile visiting on the way are small mountain villages such as Apiranthos and Koronos.
The mountain village of Apiranthos has only 760 inhabitants. It was founded in Venetian times by settlers of the island of Crete, who had fled here from the Turks. Even today, the inhabitants speak a Cretan dialect.
