Ganz im Norden der Halbinsel Akrotiri windet sich ein gepflasterter Fußpfad eine tiefe Schlucht hinunter. Unterwegs trifft man auf den Eingang zur Bärenhöhle, die schon in minoischer Zeit als Kultplatz diente. In der Antike war sie Göttin Artemis gewidmet, die sich in christlicher Zeit zur Jungfrau Maria wandelte. Sie soll der Legende nach auf eindringliche Gebete der Gläubigen einen riesigen Bären in Stein verwandelt haben.
On the northern part of the Akrotiri peninsula, a paved footpath winds down a deep ravine. On the way you will meet the entrance to the bear´s den, which already served as a cult place in Minoan times. In antiquity, it was dedicated to the goddess Artemis, which changed to the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Christian era. According to the legend she has turned a giant bear into stone, because of the emphatic prayers of the faithful.
