In the 9th century the Holy Cross Church was a gateway that protected the unsettled cathedral area towards the east. After the construction of the Bernward's Wall in the 10th century, this defensive work had become obsolete and was transformed into a church by Bishop Hezilo. The Choralei, now part of a grammar school, is the oldest profane building in Hildesheim, parts of which date back to the 12th century.
Die Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche war im 9. Jhdt. eine Toranlage, die den noch unbefestigten Dombereich gegen Osten schützte. Nach der Errichtung der Bernwardsmauer im 10. Jhdt. war dieses Verteidigungswerk überflüssig geworden und wurde von Bischof Hezilo in eine Kirche umgewandelt. Die heute zu einem Gymnasium gehörende Choralei ist der älteste Profanbau Hildesheims, Teile des Gebäudes stammen aus dem 12. Jahrhundert.
