The brick building from 1890 is the Catholic main church of the city of Kiel Kiel and of Schleswig-Holstein. The origin of the winged altar from 1515 is unclear, it was given to the church community in the course of the reconstruction of its church and is considered to be its most important work of art. In the middle it shows figures of the Virgin Mother and Child, Saint Barbara and Saint Margaret, on the left side wing Saint Sebastian and on the right wing Saint John Cantius. The outsides are decorated with paintings showing scenes from the life of Saint Nicholas.

Der Ziegelsteinbau aus dem Jahre 1890 ist die katholische Hauptkirche der Stadt Kiel Kiel und des Landes Schleswig-Holstein. Die Herkunft des Flügelaltars aus dem Jahre 1515 ist unklar, er war der Kirchengemeinde im Zuge des Neubaus der Kirche geschenkt worden und gilt als ihr bedeutendstes Kunstwerk. Er zeigt in der Mitte Figuren der Muttergottes mit dem Jesuskind, der heiligen Barbara und der heiligen Margarethe, im linken Seitenflügel den Hl. Sebastian und rechts den Hl. Johannes Cantius. Die Außenseiten sind mit Malereien mit Szenen aus dem Leben des Hl. Nikolaus verziert.
