Standing right on the market place with its steeple dominating the town, the Church of the Holy Spirit is the most famous church in Heidelberg. It stands in the middle of the market place. In 1398, the foundations of the current late Gothic church were laid on the site of even older churches but its construction lasted for about 150 years until, after being set on fire by the French during the War of the Palatinian Succession, it was rebuilt and on this occasion received a baroque spire. Originally, the church contained the tombs of the Palatinate electors but after its destruction only the tomb of Prince-Elector Rupert III, the founder of the church still remained.
Direkt auf dem Marktplatz gelegen, ist die Heilig Geist Kirche die berühmteste Kirche in Heidelberg, deren Turm die Stadt beherrscht. Im Jahre 1398 wurden die Fundamente der jetzigen spätgotischen Kirche an der Stelle noch älterer Kirchen gelegt, doch dauerte ihre Errichtung etwa 150 Jahre, bis sie, nachdem sie während des Pfälzischen Erbfolgekrieges von der Französen in Brand gesetzt worden war, wieder aufgebaut wurde und dabei eine barocke Turmspitze erhielt. Ursprünglich enthielt die Kirche die Gräber der Kurfürsten der Pfalz, doch nach ihrer Zerstörung blieb nur das Grab von Kurfürst Rupert III, dem Begründer der Kirche, erhalten.
