It is one of the landmarks of France. It is the most visited attraction of the country second to the Eiffel Tower. Surreal and pyramid-like the monastery island of Mont St-Michel Mont St-Michel, France sits enthroned overlooking a broad bay. The Romanesque complex dating back to the 12th century towers 157 m into the sky, a monumental bulwark of Christianity, founded by Norman dukes. Later the monastic mountain was converted into a military fortress before it lost all religious significance in the 18th century and became a prison. Today, some Benedictine monks live in the monastery again, between millions of sweating tourists that climb the granite cone annually. Twice a day the mountain becomes an island when the high tide comes in rapidly and turns the wide mudflats into a shallow sea. Nature combines with culture to form a stunning work of art. And if the mountain rises at sunrise from the morning mists, then one believes himself shifted into an unearthly world once and for all.
Er gehört zu den Wahrzeichen Frankreichs. Er ist die nach dem Eiffelturm meistbesuchte Attraktion des Landes. Surreal und pyramidengleich thront der Klosterberg Mont St-Michel Mont St-Michel, France majestätisch in einer ausgedehnten Bucht. 157 m hoch ragt die romanische Anlage aus dem 12. Jahrhundert in den Himmel, ein monumentales Bollwerk des Christentums, gestiftet von normannischen Herzögen. Später wurde der Mönchsberg zur militärischen Festung ausgebaut, bevor er im 18. Jahrhundert jegliche religiöse Bedeutung verlor und zum Gefängnis mutierte. Heute leben wieder einige Benediktinermönche im Kloster zwischen Millionen von Touristen, die den Granitkegel alljährlich emporschwitzen. Zweimal am Tag wird der Klosterberg zur Insel, wenn die Flut rasend schnell hereinbricht und die weite Wattlandschaft in ein flaches Meer verwandelt. Natur und Kultur verbinden sich hier zu einem überwältigenden Gesamtkunstwerk. Wenn dann noch der Klosterberg bei Sonnenaufgang aus den Frühnebeln gleichsam emporsteigt, glaubt man sich endgültig in eine überirdische Welt versetzt.
