Nur einen Block jenseits der Repräsentationsbauten zeigt Zagreb sein wahres Gesicht. Auch wenn die Hauptstadt-Region zu den wirtschaftlich stärksten des Landes gehört, erinnert die allgegenwärtige Armut an den mühsamen Aufholprozess des Landes nach den verheerenden Kriegsjahren und der Finanzkrise von 2009, die Kroatien besonders hart traf. In den Folgejahren sank die Wirtschaftsleistung um 18 Prozent.

Although the capital region is one of the country's strongest economies, ubiquitous poverty recalls the country's cumbersome catching-up process following the devastating war years and the financial crisis of 2009. It hit Croatia particularly hard. In the following years, economic output fell by 18 percent.
