Auf einem Bronzepferd blickt der Namensgeber säbelschwingend über seine Stadt: Graf Ban Jelačić, der Nationalheld, der 1848 auf Seiten der Habsburger die ungarische Revolution niederschlug. Das macht ihn bis heute zum Symbol für die kroatische, nationale Identität.
Information exchange, marketplace and transport hub: the Jelačić square unites all this. On a bronze horse the namesake gazes saber-sweeping over his city: Count Ban Jelačić, the national hero, who suppressed the Hungarian revolution on the part of the Habsburgs in 1848. This makes him a symbol of Croatian national identity.
