Gäste kamen meist durch das Osttor. Es führt direkt in das Zentrum der Anlage zum Peristyl, dem Vorzimmer des Palastes unter freiem Himmel. Dort empfing Diokletian hohe Würdenträger und private Besucher. Die theatralische Kulisse sollte die Gäste ergriffen machen, bevor dann der pensionierte Kaiser in einem gut inszenierten Schauspiel gottgleich auf dem Balkon erschien.
Most guests came in through the east gate. It leads directly into the center of the complex: to the Peristyle, the anteroom of the palace under the open sky. There Diocletian received high dignitaries and private visitors. The theatrical backdrop should make the guests seized, before the retired emperor appeared in a well-staged spectacle godlike on the balcony.
