Verwaltungstechnisch gehört die Kvarner Bucht um Rijeka Rijeka und Opatija Opatija eigentlich gar nicht zu Istrien, aber geographisch darf man sie noch zur Halbinsel zählen. Durch hohe Berge vor kalten Winden geschützt, besitzt der Küstenabschnitt ein besonders mildes Klima. So erwies sich die k.-u.-k.-Riviera um die Wende zum 20. Jahrhundert als idealer Ort für den kränklichen europäischen Adel, der hier die Wintermonate verbrachte. Rijekas große Stunde schlug im 19. Jahrhundert, als die Ungarn den Hafen großzügig ausbauen ließen – in direkter Konkurrenz zum von Wien aus verwalteten Triest. Noch heute betreibt die 130.000 Einwohnerstadt den wichtigsten Hafen des Landes.

Administratively, the Kvarner Bay around Rijeka Rijeka and Opatija Opatija is not actually part of Istria, but geographically it can be counted to the peninsula. Protected from cold winds by high mountains, the coastline has a particularly mild climate. Thus, the k.-u.-k.-Riviera at the turn of the 20th century proved to be the ideal place for the ailing European nobility - they spent the winter months here. Rijeka's great heyday struck in the 19th century, when the Hungarians generously expanded the harbor. They were in direct competition with Trieste - managed from Vienna. Even today, the city of 130,000 inhabitants operates the most important port in the country.
