Wie sich touristische Ideale gewandelt haben, zeigt der Winterkurort des verblichenen europäischen Hochadels. Heute wollen Urlauber vor allem Weite, Sonne und breite Strände. Doch Opatija, das ehemalige Abbazia, stammt aus einer anderen Zeit. Es schmiegt sich an einen steilen Osthang. Der Strand präsentiert sich schmal und die Sonne verschwindet schon am frühen Abend hinter den Bergen. Im 19. Jahrhundert ging es auch nicht ums Sonnenbaden, sondern ums Flanieren in guter Luft. Und genau das hat Opatija auch heute noch zu bieten. Der noble Kurort will seinen Gästen zeigen, dass Erholung tatsächlich mehr ist als nur Braunwerden.
How tourist ideals have changed the winter resort of the faded European aristocracy shows. Today vacationers want sun and broad beaches above all expanse. But Opatija, the former Abbazia, comes from another time. It is located on a steep eastern slope. The beach is narrow and the sun disappears behind the mountains in the early evening. But in the 19th century, it was not about sunbathing, but strolling in the fresh air. And that is exactly what Opatija has to offer today. The noble health resort wants to show its guests that relaxation is more than just tanning.
