Es galt, den Isthmus von Pelješac zu schützen und deshalb baute man bei Ston Ston, Croatia eine Festung, aber nicht irgendeine Festung: Fast 6 km lang und mit 40 Wehrtürmen sowie 5 Bastionen bestückt, riegelte eine Mauer den Zugang zum Festland komplett ab, denn es galt, die profitablen Salinen sowie die Austernkulturen von Ston zu sichern. Nach aufwändigen Renovierungsarbeiten ist die angeblich längste Mauer Europas wieder auf ganzer Länge begehbar. Sie bietet schöne Blicke auf die Ortsteile Mali Ston und Veliki Ston an den beiden Enden des Isthmus.

It was necessary to protect the isthmus of Pelješac. Therefore at Ston Ston, Croatia a fortress was built, but not just any fortress: it is almost 6 km long and has 40 towers and 5 bastions. A wall completely blocked the access to the mainland, because it was necessary to secure the profitable salines and the oyster cultures of Ston. After extensive renovations, the allegedly longest wall in Europe can be walked on along its entire length. It offers beautiful views on the hamlets of Mali Ston and Veliki Ston at the two ends of the isthmus.
