Nur 11.000 Menschen leben in der Mini-Metropole, doch dank der großzügigen, marmorgepflasterten Promenaden und Plätze verströmt der Ort einen Hauch von großstädtischem Flair. Die meisten Bauten entstanden im 15. und 16. Jahrhundert, am Höhepunkt der venezianischen Herrschaft in Dalmatien. Damals gehörte Hvar zu den wichtigsten Stützpunkten der venezianischen Flotte. Die Stadt besitzt daher ein venezianisches Ortsbild, um das sie viele Küstenstädte des Mittelbmeerraumes beneiden.
Only 11,000 people live in the mini-metropolis. But thanks to the spacious, marble-paved promenades and squares, the place exudes a touch of metropolitan flair. Most of the buildings were built in the 15th and 16th century, at the heyday of Venetian rule in Dalmatia. At that time Hvar belonged to the most important bases of the Venetian fleet. Therefore the city has a Venetian townscape and is envied by many of the coastal towns of the Mediterranean for it.
