Registan in 1900#

When George Curzon, Viceroy of India, visited the centre of Samarkand, the Registan Square, at the end of the 19th century, he found only ruins. Nevertheless, he wrote, 'I know nothing in Europe that is close to Registan in simplicity and grandiosity, even nothing that could be compared with it.' The Registan was the centrepiece of the oriental Samarkand, where the ruler announced his edicts, where court was held, and where there was lively market bustle.
Als George Curzon, Vizekönig von Indien, Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts das Zentrum Samarkands, den Registan-Platz besuchte, fand er nur noch Ruinen vor. Trotzdem schrieb er „Ich kenne nichts in Europa, das dem Registan in Einfachheit und Grandiosität nahe kommt, sogar nichts, was sich mit ihm vergleichen ließe“. Der Registan war das Herzstück des orientalischen Samarkand, auf dem der Herrscher Erlasse verkündete, wo Gericht gehalten wurde und wo auch reges Markttreiben herrschte.
