In the background, the Kalon Minor, meaning Great Minaret, reminds of an embarrassing mishap. Technical errors led to its collapse in the 12th century. In order to avoid such a disaster for the future, it was decided to erect the minaret now without haste. The builder, who had laid the foundation with a solution of alabaster and camel milk, even got out of Bukhara, lest somebody could force him to continue building before the foundation was completely dried. Two years later, he returned and completed the 45 m high monument. It has actually survived and offers beautiful views over the old town. In addition to its religious function, the building also served as a 'lighthouse' for caravans and as a watchtower to spot approaching enemies in time.
