Initially, the rise of Dubai was financed by fossil oil, but thepresent-day glamour of the city has a name: Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Since 1995, the current head of state is responsible for all development projects. At his inauguration he said: "I do not know if I am a good leader, but I have visions." And these visions outclassed everything seen before. He created the tiny little Dubai, not more than the size of Burgenland, a small global power in trade, finance and tourism. The enormous success gives him wings. But it is also in the nature of wings that time after time you still have to come back to earth and if you are not careful, this happens quicker than you prefer.
Finanziert wurde der Aufstieg Dubais anfangs zwar mit Öl, aber der heutige Glanz der Stadt trägt einen Namen: Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Seit 1995 zeichnet das jetzige Staatsoberhaupt für alle Entwicklungsprojekte verantwortlich. Bei Amtsantritt meinte er: „Ich weiß nicht, ob ich ein guter Führer bin, aber ich habe Visionen.“ Und diese Visionen stellten alles Dagewesene in den Schatten. Er machte aus dem winzigen Dubai, gerademal so groß wie das Burgenland, im Bereich Handel, Finanzen und Tourismus eine kleine Weltmacht. Der enorme Erfolg verleiht Flügel. Es liegt aber auch in der Natur von Flügeln, dass man trotzdem immer wieder zurück auf den Boden muss und wenn man nicht aufpasst, geht dies schneller, als einem lieb ist.
