Aleppo Aleppo, Syria is the biggest city of the country with 4 million inhabitants. While Damascus Damaskus, Syria is known as the "holy city", Aleppo has been the undisputed economic and trade centre of the region since millennia. The city was a significant trading point of the Silk Road. Despite being a bit marginalised because of the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869, Aleppo is still one of the biggest commercial metropolises of the Middle East, besides Cairo and Istanbul.

4 Millionen Einwohner machen Aleppo Aleppo, Syria zur größten Stadt des Landes. Während Damaskus Damaskus, Syria immer als die „heilige Stadt“ galt, ist Aleppo seit Jahrtausenden das unbestrittene Wirtschafts- und Handelszentrum der Region. Die Stadt war schon bedeutender Umschlagplatz der Seidenstrasse. Auch wenn sie mit der Suez-Kanal-Öffnung 1869 etwas an den Rand gedrängt wurde, gehört sie neben Kairo und Istanbul immer noch zu den größten Handelsmetropolen des Nahen Ostens.
