The Jordan Rift Valley is the Northern continuation of the Great Rift Valley in Africa. The world’s lowest point is located there. There, 400 meters below sea level stretches a giant salt lake, the Dead Sea. This 430 meters deep body of water has several inlets, but no outlet. Therefore and because of the high evaporation rate the lake’s water has a salt content of over 30 %, 10 times the amount of the Mediterranean Sea. With the exception of some bacteria and halophytes (plants with a high tolerance for salt) nothing living can be found in the lake.

Der Jordangraben stellt die nördliche Fortsetzung des großen afrikanischen Grabenbruchs dar. Dort liegt der tiefste Punkt der Erde. 400 m unter dem mittleren Meerespiegel breitet sich ein riesiger Salzsee aus, das Tote Meer Jordanien, Totes Meer . Das 430 m tiefe Gewässer hat mehrere Zuflüsse, aber keinen Abfluss. Deshalb, aber auch wegen der hohen Verdunstung beträgt der Salzgehalt über 30 %, 10 x soviel wie der des Mittelmeers. Außer ein paar Bakterien und einigen Halophyten, Pflanzen mit hoher Salztoleranz, findet sich im Meer nichts Lebendes.
