Unweit von Leh dient die Sankar-Gompa aus dem 19. Jahrhundert, in der etwa 20 Mönche leben, dem ladakhischen Oberhaupt der Gelbmützensekte als Residenz. Mit ihren zweigeschossigen Mönchszellen strahlt die sie eine wohnliche Atmosphäre aus. Wohlhabende Adelige, Kaufleute und Könige haben weder Geld noch Mühen gescheut und zur Errichtung eines neuen Klosters die besten Architekten ins Land geholt. Mit dem Bau sammelten die Auftraggeber nicht nur religiöse Verdienste, d.h. gutes Karma, sondern schufen zugleich ein politisches Prestigeprojekt. Gompa, der einheimische Name für eine Klosteranlage, macht dies deutlich: er heißt übersetzt 'Stiftung'.
Not far from Leh is the 19th-century Sankar Gompa, home to around 20 monks, the Ladakh chief of the Yellow Hat sect. With its two-storey monk's cells, it radiates a homely atmosphere. Wealthy nobles, merchants and kings have spared neither money nor effort, and have brought in the best architects to build a new monastery. With the construction, the clients not only collected religious merits, that means good karma, but also created a political prestige project. Gompa, the local name for a monastery complex, makes this clear: translated it means 'foundation'.
