Mit dem Mahayana-Buddhismus kam der Glaube auf, dass der historische Buddha nur einer von vielen ist. Als Buddha Shakyamuni wird er mit goldenem Körper und blaugelocktem Haar auf einem Lotusthron sitzend dargestellt. In der linken Hand hält er eine Bettelschale als Symbol eines Lebens in Armut. Mit der rechten Hand berührt er die Erde, um sie als Zeugin für seine Erleuchtung anzurufen. Jedes der 108 Details einer Buddha-Statue hat eine ganz bestimmte Bedeutung. 108 ist nämlich die heilige Zahl des Buddhismus. Sie symbolisiert die 108 Bände der gesammelten Lehren Buddhas und auch jene 108 menschlichen Begierden, die es zu überwinden gilt. Wenn sich Daumen und Zeigefinger zu einem Kreis vereinen, stellen sie das 'Rad der Lehre' dar und fordern zur Diskussion über Buddhas Erkenntnissen auf.

When thumb and forefinger join together to form a circle, they represent the 'wheel of teaching' and invite discussion about Buddha's findings.
