Vom einstigen Glanz der Stadt hat sich kaum etwas erhalten. Nur die Gotteshäuser von Mtskheta gehören noch heute zu den wichtigsten Pilgerzentren des Landes: Hoch über der Stadt erhebt sich die unescogeschützte Jvari-Kirche. Sie geht auf das 6. Jahrhundert zurück und bildet eines der frühesten Beispiele einer Kreuzkuppelkirche. Die heilige Nino, jene syrische Nonne, die hier am Königshof lebte und die Herrscher vom Christentum überzeugte, soll an dieser Stelle ein Kreuz in den Boden gerammt haben.
The former splendor of the city isn´t preserved well. Only the churches of Mtskheta are still among the most important pilgrim centers in the country: high above the city rises the UNESCO-heritage Jvari Church. It dates back to the 6th century and is one of the earliest examples of a cross-domed church. Saint Nino, the Syrian nun who lived here at the royal court and convinced the rulers of Christianity, is said to have rammed a cross into the ground at this point.
