zu. Die Höhlenstadt wurde vor 3000 Jahren gegründet und entwickelte sich schnell zu einem wohlhabenden Handelsort an einem Nebenzweig der Seidenstraße. Bis ins 10. Jahrhundert war sie von großer Bedeutung als Residenz die Könige von Kartli, die vor dem Araberansturm aus Tiflis geflüchtet waren. Damals lebten etwa 20.000 Menschen in Uplistsikhe.
In der Unterstadt befand sich das Handwerks- und Handelsviertel, von dem aus ein steiler Aufstieg zu den Wohnbezirken führte. Ganz oben lagen die Kirchen und der Palastbereich.

. The cave city was founded 3000 years ago and quickly became a prosperous trading center on a branch of the Silk Road. Until the 10th century it was of great importance as a residence for the kings of Kartli, who had fled from Tbilisi before the Arabian uprising. At that time, about 20,000 people lived in Uplistsikhe.
In the lower town was the craft and trade district, from which a steep ascent led to the residential districts. At the top were the churches and the palace area.
