The traditional houses of the Hani are three-storey and consist of tamped foundation walls. A construction of bamboo and wood - recently bricks, too - form the walls covered by a thatched roof. On the upper floor are the living rooms and hay barns, on the ground floor the domestic animals. Above all, the good-natured water buffalo plays an important role in the cultivation of the rice fields, because the aid of machinery is hardly possible in the steep terrain.
Die traditionellen Wohnhäuser der Hani sind dreistöckig und bestehen aus einer erdgestampften Grundmauer. Eine Konstruktion aus Bambus und Holz – neuerdings auch Ziegeln – bilden die Wände, die von einem Strohdach abgedeckt werden. Oben liegen Wohnräume und Getreidelager, unten leben die Haustiere. Vor allem der gutmütige Wasserbüffel spielt eine wichtige Rolle bei der Bewirtschaftung der Reisfelder, denn der Einsatz von Maschinen ist im steilen Gelände kaum möglich.
