The influence of the Dai minority becomes evident in the numerous Buddhist temples of the city. Initially, the Dai, a subgroup of the Thai peoples, probably came from Taiwan before they sought a new space to live in southern China. With the Mongol invasion, they fled as far afield as the Xishuangbanna region. In the 13th century, their relatives moved even farther south and founded the first Thai kingdom in the region that is now Thailand. All Dai avow themselves a Buddhist.
