At the junction of the main trade routes of South China, the Burma Road and the Tea Horse Road to Tibet, Dali has been for hundreds of years the melting pot of different cultures and home of the Bai minority, which today counts about 2 million people. For 1000 years, the bay ruled over the powerful kingdom of Nanzhou and its successor, the kingdom of Dali. Although it was incorporated into the Chinese empire during the Mongol invasion in the 13th century, Dali remained for centuries a largely autonomous trading centre. Due to its well-preserved historic townscape it is one of Yunnan's major tourist magnets today.
