All Chinese belief systems agree in their basic conception of the cosmos. Everything in this universe is part of a whole, in which every movement affects all other elements. Therefore, a life in harmony with the environment and the cosmos has top priority. Likewise, ancestral worship occupies a central position - a relic of the original animism. The deceased affect the life of the dependants as good or evil spirits. With the aid of offerings and oracles one contacts his ancestors, asks for advice, health and protection for his family.
Einig sind sich alle chinesischen Glaubenssysteme in ihrer Grundauffassung des Kosmos. Alles in diesem Universum ist Teil eines Ganzen, in dem sich jede Bewegung auf alle anderen Elemente auswirkt. Daher hat ein Leben in Einklang mit Umwelt und Kosmos höchste Priorität. Ebenso besitzt die Ahnenverehrung eine zentrale Bedeutung – ein Relikt des ursprünglichen Animismus. Die Verstorbenen wirken als gute oder böse Geister auf das Leben der Hinterbliebenen ein. Mittels Opfergaben und Orakel nimmt man Verbindung zu den Ahnen auf, bittet um Rat, Gesundheit und Schutz für die Familie.
