Muffled bangs come from the workshops of the gold beaters. Two hours or 2,800 times these craftsmen beat a gold foil until it reaches the thickness of a ten thousandth of a millimeter. Cut into small squares the gold foil is so light that they float in the air. This way almost one square meter of leaf gold can be gained from one single gram of metal. To put it differently: 50,000 of these leaves weigh one gram. The faithful eagerly stick them to the numerous Buddha statues of the country.
