The churches are particularly famous for their Khachkars (German Chatschkar), artfully chiseld “stones of memory” with a cross in the middle, decorated in a variety of ways, sometimes purely ornamental, sometimes showing plants or animals and more.

The rectangular slabs are up to 2 m high. The art of carving such stones started in the 9 th century and continued till about 1800.
