Seit 1956 lautet der Wahlspruch der USA 'In God we trust'. Hintergrund der Entscheidung war der Kalte Krieg und das Bemühen, die Einigkeit des amerikanischen Volkes gegenüber den gottlosen Kommunisten zu unterstreichen. Oft wurde gegen den Spruch geklagt, da er die Religionsfreiheit, nämlich nicht an Gott zu glauben, verletzt – bislang erfolglos. Nach Ansicht der Gerichte habe der Spruch nur zeremoniellen Charakter.
Trotzdem – in Washington hat man dem christlichen Gott ein monumentales Denkmal gesetzt. 83 Jahre dauerte der Bau der neugotischen Kathedrale, bis sie 1990 endlich eingeweiht werden konnte. Unter den größten Gotteshäusern der Welt nimmt sie den 6. Platz ein. 92 m hoch und von 215 prachtvollen Glasfenstern eingerahmt, flößt sie tatsächlich Ehrfurcht ein.
Since 1956 the motto of the USA is 'In God we trust'. The background to this decision was the Cold War and an effort to underline the unity of the American people in contrast to the godless Communists. The motto has often been sued as it infringes the freedom of religion, namely not to believe in God at all - so far unsuccessful. According to the courts, the motto has a ceremonial character only.
Nevertheless, in Washington, a memorial in the Christian god's honour was erected . The construction of the neo-Gothic cathedral took 83 years until it was finally inaugurated in 1990. It takes the 6th place among the largest churches in the world. 92 m high and with 215 magnificent stained-glass windows, it is really awe-inspiring.
