Eine griechisch-antik angehauchte Rotunde ehrt den Philosophen unter den Präsidenten, Thomas Jefferson. Der geniale Staatsphilosoph hatte die USA in ihren Anfängen maßgeblich geprägt. Er verfasste die Unabhängigkeitserklärung. Er gründete die University of Virginia und seine Privatbücherei bildete den Grundstock für den Aufbau der Kongressbibliothek. Sein Denken war stark von der Aufklärung geprägt. Jefferson setzte sich für eine strikte Trennung von Religion und Staat, für große Freiheiten des Einzelnen und eine föderale Struktur des Staates ein. Zur Sklaverei äußerste er sich ablehnend, beschäftigte aber selbst Sklaven.
A Greek-antique-like rotunda honors the philosopher among the presidents, Thomas Jefferson. The brilliant political philosopher had essentially shaped the United States in its early days. He wrote the Declaration of Independence. He founded the University of Virginia and his private library provided the basis for the Library of Congress. His thinking was strongly influenced by the age of Enlightenment. Jefferson supported the cause of a strict separation between religion and state, of personal liberties and of a federal structure of the state. He disapproved of slavery, but nevertheless employed slaves himself.
