Einen Museumsrundgang beginnt man am besten im Märchenschloss des Smithsonian Visitor Centers, das alles über die National Mall weiß. Es beherbergt auch das Grab von James Smithson. Der wohlhabende Chemiker hatte Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts sein gesamtes Vermögen dem Staat vermacht, mit dem Auftrag der 'Vermehrung und der Verbreitung von Wissen'. Daraus entstand das Smithsonian Forschungsinstitut, das heute u.a. 19 Museen mit 156 Millionen Objekten betreibt.
A museum tour is best started at the fairy tale castle of the Smithsonian Visitor Center, which knows all about the National Mall. It also houses the tomb of James Smithson. The wealthy chemist had bequeathed his entire fortune to the state at the beginning of the nineteenth century, with the order to 'increase and spread knowledge'. From this emerged the Smithsonian Research Institute, which today runs, among others, 19 museums with 156 million objects.
