Auch die Kongressbibliothek erhielt 1897 ein neues Gebäude. Mit 39 Millionen Büchern in 470 Sprachen ist sie die größte Bibliothek unseres Planeten – zumindest, was die Zahl der Bücher angeht. Zählt man Handschriften, Karten, Filme und Drucke dazu, belegt sie mit 167 Mio. Medieneinheiten knapp den zweiten Platz hinter der British Library in London. Schon die marmorne Eingangshalle überwältigt den Besucher.
The Library of Congress, too, moved into a new building in 1897. With 39 million books in 470 languages, it's the largest library on the planet - at least in terms of books. Including manuscripts, maps, films and prints, it gets second place with 167 million documents behind the British Library in London. Yet the marble entrance hall overwhelms the visitor.
