Außerhalb der geschichtsträchtigen Old City zeigt sich Philadelphia weniger beschaulich. Über dem Masonic Temple, einem Versammlungszentrum der Freimaurer, thronen die Glaspaläste von Banken und Versicherungen. Nachdem Philadelphia im Jahr 1800 seine Hauptstadtwürden an Washington verlor, begann eine wirtschaftliche Talfahrt. Auf der anderen Seite mauserte sich New York City zum neuen Kultur- und Wirtschaftszentrum der USA. Philadelphia rutschte von Platz 1 auf Platz 6 im Ranking der größten amerikanischen Städte ab.
Outside the historic Old City, Philadelphia is less contemplative. Above the Masonic Temple, a Masonic assembly centre, tower the glass-walled office buildings of banks and insurance companies. After Philadelphia lost its status as capital to Washington in 1800, an economic decline began. On the other hand, New York City has become the new cultural and economic centre of the United States. Philadelphia slipped down from #1 to #6 in the ranking of the largest American cities.
