After so much enjoyment of art, you deserve a little break in the countryside and the Central Park comes in handy. In 1853, the city bought a 4 km long and 1 km wide strip of land full of stinking swamps and dry scrub. Out of this, the landscape architects conjured a 360-acre paradise of meadows, ponds and forests, an engineering masterpiece in a class of its own. Twenty thousand workers moved 10 million loads of earth, planted 24,000 trees and laid out 7 lakes. After construction time of 20 years, the work was completed. Today, the park has 42 million visitors annually. On some days, up to 500,000 people relax in the green belt of the city. In fact, Central Park is a peaceful retreat amidst the hustle and bustle of New York. It houses 29 playgrounds, 21 ball game fields, 9000 benches, 36 bridges, 150 ha of lakes and 80 ha of forest. The park is being maintained by the Central Park Conservancy, which covers its annual budget almost exclusively from donations. Nearly 400 employees and many volunteers are working around the clock. Every year, they plant hundreds of thousands of flowers, remove graffiti within 24 hours, collect 2,000 tons of rubbish every year and thus ensure the preservation of this unique paradise.
